The Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt was the first dynasty of the New Kingdom and one of the most famous in Egyptian history. It was founded by Ahmose I, who expelled the Hyksos rulers from the north and reunited the country. Its pharaohs included Hatshepsut, one of the few women to rule as king, and Thutmose III, who led military campaigns that created an empire reaching into Syria. Amenhotep III presided over a time of great wealth and monumental building, and his son Akhenaten attempted a religious revolution around the worship of the god Aten. The dynasty also included Tutankhamun, whose tomb was found almost intact in 1922, and ended with Horemheb.
