Gustav Klimt was born on 14 July 1862 in Baumgarten. An Austrian painter, Klimt was the most prominent member of the Vienna Secession, the group of artists that broke with the conservative academy. His work is distinguished by sensual, decorative figures, gold leaf and patterns, as in The Kiss, Judith and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. He also painted landscapes, allegorical works and the Beethoven Frieze, and designed the Stoclet Frieze in Brussels. His university ceiling paintings drew scandal and were destroyed in a fire in 1945. He died after a stroke and pneumonia during the influenza epidemic.
