Birth of Evo Morales

26 October 1959

Evo Morales was born on 26 October 1959 in Oruro. A Bolivian politician and the country's first president of indigenous descent, Morales rose from the coca growers' union in the Chapare region to lead the Movement for Socialism. He won the presidency in 2005 and took office the following January, then nationalized the hydrocarbon industry, wrote a new constitution that recognized Bolivia as a plurinational state, and reduced poverty during a commodity boom. His decision to seek a fourth term, despite a referendum against it, led to disputed elections and mass protests in 2019. He resigned under pressure from the military and went into exile, before returning home in 2020.
