Domitian was born on 24 October 51 CE in Rome. The eleventh Roman emperor, Domitian was the younger son of Vespasian and the brother of Titus, whom he succeeded in 81. He ruled as an autocrat, taking the title of censor for life and demanding to be addressed as lord and god, but he was also an effective administrator who rebuilt Rome after a fire, strengthened the frontiers, and restored finances. His campaigns against the Dacians were inconclusive. His relations with the Senate grew hostile, and a reign of fear led to executions, and, finally, to his assassination in a palace conspiracy. The Senate condemned his memory, though soldiers mourned him.
