Tacitus was born in 55 CE in Gallia Narbonensis. A Roman historian and senator, Tacitus wrote the Annals and the Histories, which together covered the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus to the end of the Flavian dynasty. His other works include the Agricola, a biography of his father-in-law, the governor of Britain, and the Germania, an ethnographic study of the Germanic peoples. He is admired for his concise, sharp style and his skeptical view of imperial power, and the claim that he writes without anger or partiality. He served as consul and as governor of the province of Asia.
