Anatole France was born on 16 April 1844 in Paris. A French novelist, poet and critic, Anatole France was born Jacques Anatole Thibault and was one of the most respected French writers of his era. His works include The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard, Thais, The Gods Are Athirst and Penguin Island, which are noted for elegant style, skeptical wit and humane irony. He was a supporter of Alfred Dreyfus during the Dreyfus Affair and later of socialist causes. He was elected to the Academie francaise in 1896 and awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. The surrealists mocked him at his death, and his reputation faded.
