Batavian Republic

from 19 January 1795 to 5 June 1806

The Batavian Republic was the Dutch state that replaced the Dutch Republic of the United Provinces, formed after the Dutch Patriots, backed by French revolutionary armies, overthrew the stadtholder William V, who fled to England. It was a sister republic of France, with a more centralised government than the loose federation of provinces before it, and its constitution of 1798 was a unitary one with a national parliament. It was forced to pay for the French occupation and lost colonial possessions to Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1806, Napoleon turned it into the Kingdom of Holland and made his brother Louis its king. Some of its reforms, such as the abolition of provincial privileges, shaped the modern Netherlands.
