The Arpad dynasty was the first ruling house of Hungary, named after Arpad, the leader of the Magyar tribes who entered the Carpathian Basin at the end of the ninth century. Under Geza and his son Stephen I, who was crowned as the first king and became a saint, the Hungarians accepted Christianity and became a European kingdom. Other members of the house included Saint Ladislaus, Coloman and Bela IV, who rebuilt the country after the Mongol invasion of 1241, and Andrew II, who issued the Golden Bull of 1222, limiting royal power. The dynasty died out in the male line with Andrew III, and the throne passed to the Angevins.
