The Allied invasion of Sicily, code-named Operation Husky, was the first large-scale Allied landing on the European mainland territory of the Axis powers and one of the largest amphibious operations of the war. British forces under Bernard Montgomery and American forces under George Patton landed on the southern and southeastern coasts after heavy air and naval bombardment and extensive airborne landings. Italian and German troops resisted, but the Germans eventually withdrew across the Strait of Messina to the mainland. The campaign contributed to the fall of Benito Mussolini, who was removed from power by the Fascist Grand Council. It led directly to the Allied invasion of mainland Italy and to Italy's armistice in September.
