On 30 August 2023, a group of Gabonese military officers appeared on television to announce that they had seized power, shortly after the election commission declared Ali Bongo the winner of a disputed presidential election. Bongo had ruled since 2009, succeeding his father Omar Bongo, whose family had held power in the oil-producing Central African country since 1967. The officers, calling themselves the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, put Bongo under house arrest and cancelled the election results. General Brice Oligui Nguema, head of the presidential guard, was sworn in as transitional president and later won an election in 2025. The coup was one of several in Africa in the early 2020s.
