On 8 January 2023, a week after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office as Brazil's president, thousands of supporters of the defeated former president Jair Bolsonaro broke into the buildings of the National Congress, the Supreme Federal Court and the Planalto presidential palace in Brasília, vandalising offices and artworks. The rioters, who had camped outside army barracks for weeks, claimed without evidence that the October 2022 election had been stolen. Security forces regained control the same day, and many hundreds of people were arrested. The Supreme Court prosecuted participants and organisers, and in 2025 it convicted Bolsonaro of plotting a coup. The attack was compared by many to the storming of the US Capitol in 2021.
