2017 United Kingdom general election

8 June 2017

The 2017 United Kingdom general election was called early by Prime Minister Theresa May, who hoped to strengthen her majority in Parliament ahead of the Brexit negotiations. The campaign turned against her, after a poorly received manifesto and a strong performance by Labour under Jeremy Corbyn. The Conservatives remained the largest party but lost their majority, resulting in a hung parliament. May formed a minority government supported by the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland under a confidence and supply arrangement. Labour gained seats and its share of the vote rose sharply, while the Scottish National Party lost seats.
