The Proterozoic eon covers almost two billion years, from 2.5 billion years ago to the start of the Cambrian 538.8 million years ago. Oxygen from photosynthesis built up in the air during the Great Oxidation Event, and cells with a nucleus, the eukaryotes, appeared.
Long glaciations known as Snowball Earth episodes marked the Cryogenian period, about 720 to 635 million years ago, and the era closes with the Ediacaran, which holds the first large soft-bodied animals.
