The Wari were the people of a state and culture that flourished in the central Andes of Peru during the Middle Horizon, before the rise of the Incas. Their capital, Huari, near present-day Ayacucho, was one of the largest cities in the Andes. The Wari built administrative centres across a wide territory, with planned layouts, terraces, canals and roads that anticipated Inca engineering, as well as storehouses. Their fine textiles, ceramics and tapestries show rich religious imagery, shared with their contemporary Tiwanaku, to the south. The Wari state collapsed around 1000, possibly because of drought and internal unrest, but its administrative practices influenced the later Inca empire.
