The War of the Fifth Coalition was fought in 1809 between Napoleon's France and its allies and an alliance of Austria and Britain. Austria, led militarily by Archduke Charles, attacked Bavaria, but Napoleon quickly counterattacked, won at Eckmühl and occupied Vienna in May. He suffered his first major defeat at Aspern-Essling, then defeated the Austrians decisively at Wagram. The Treaty of Schönbrunn followed, in which Austria ceded territory and paid indemnities. Elsewhere the Tyrolean rebellion under Andreas Hofer resisted Bavarian and French rule, and a British expedition to Walcheren in the Netherlands ended in failure and heavy losses from disease.
