Visigothic Kingdom

from 476 CE to 718 CE

The Visigothic Kingdom was a Germanic state that ruled much of Spain and, at first, southern France, as a successor to the Western Roman Empire. The Visigoths had settled in Gaul in the early fifth century as allies of Rome, and after being defeated by the Franks at Vouille in 507 they shifted their centre to Hispania, with Toledo as the capital. Under King Reccared in 587 they converted from Arian Christianity to Catholicism, which brought the Gothic elite closer to the Hispano-Roman population. The kingdom was weakened by succession struggles, and after the Muslim army defeated King Roderic in 711, most of the peninsula came under Umayyad control. Some Christian resistance in the north later led to the kingdom of Asturias.
