Twenty-third Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 818 BCE to 715 BCE

The Twenty-third Dynasty of Egypt was a line of kings of Libyan descent who ruled part of Egypt from Leontopolis in the Delta and from Thebes, during the Third Intermediate Period, when the country was divided among competing rulers. They existed alongside the Twenty-second Dynasty, which they challenged, and later alongside the Twenty-fourth. Kings such as Pedubast I, Takelot III and Rudamun are known from inscriptions and records. The country's fragmentation made it vulnerable to the Kushite king Piye, who marched north from Nubia and received the submission of the delta rulers. The Kushite conquest then brought the dynasty to an end and started the Twenty-fifth Dynasty.
