Ancient Carthage

from c. 814 BCE to 146 BCE

Ancient Carthage was a Phoenician city on the coast of what is now Tunisia, founded as a colony of Tyre according to tradition by the queen Dido, also called Elissa. It grew into the leading commercial power of the western Mediterranean, controlling trade routes and territories in North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia and southern Spain. Its rivalry with Rome led to the three Punic Wars, in which the general Hannibal famously led an army over the Alps into Italy. After the Third Punic War, the Romans destroyed the city in 146 BCE. Julius Caesar and Augustus later refounded it as a Roman colony, and it became one of the main cities of the Roman Empire in Africa.
