Twenty-second Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 945 BCE to 715 BCE

The Twenty-second Dynasty was an Egyptian dynasty of Libyan origin founded by Shoshenq I, a descendant of Meshwesh chiefs who had settled in Egypt and risen in the army and the state. Its rulers governed from Bubastis in the Nile Delta. Shoshenq I campaigned in Palestine, which is recorded in his reliefs at Karnak and is generally identified with the Shishak of the Hebrew Bible who attacked Jerusalem. Later kings were weaker, and during the Third Intermediate Period power was divided among competing local dynasties in the Delta and in Upper Egypt. The dynasty gradually lost its authority and ended as the Kushite kings from the south extended their control over Egypt.
