Construction of Solomon's Temple

from c. 996 BCE to 586 BCE

Solomon's Temple, also called the First Temple, was the temple in Jerusalem that the Hebrew Bible says was built by King Solomon as a home for the Ark of the Covenant. According to the biblical account, it was constructed with the help of craftsmen and cedar wood from Hiram, king of Tyre, on the hill now known as the Temple Mount. It stood as the centre of worship in the kingdom of Judah until the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II destroyed Jerusalem and the temple. No archaeological remains have been identified with certainty, because excavation on the Temple Mount is restricted, and scholars disagree over the precise date and details of the building. The Second Temple was built after the Jews returned from exile.
