Treaty of Pereyaslav

1654

The Treaty of Pereyaslav refers to the agreement reached at a council in the town of Pereyaslav, in which Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the Zaporozhian Cossack leadership swore allegiance to Tsar Alexis of Russia. The Cossacks were seeking protection against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, with whom they were at war. The nature of the agreement has been interpreted very differently: Russian and Soviet historians presented it as the reunification of Ukraine and Russia, while Ukrainian historians have usually seen it as a military alliance that preserved the Cossack state's autonomy. It led to a long war between Russia and Poland, and its effects shaped the later division of Ukraine between the two powers.
