Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle

18 October 1748

The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, signed in the German city now called Aachen, ended the War of the Austrian Succession. Maria Theresa's right to rule the Habsburg lands was confirmed, but Austria lost most of Silesia to Prussia, which kept the conquest. The Spanish infante Philip received the duchies of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla in Italy. France gave back its conquests in the Austrian Netherlands, and Britain and France returned each other's colonial conquests, so that Louisbourg in North America was restored to France in exchange for Madras being returned to the British East India Company. Many saw it as an unsatisfying settlement, since the rivalries among the powers remained and soon led to the Seven Years' War.
