The Tahirid dynasty was a Persian dynasty that governed the province of Khorasan in the eastern Islamic world, nominally under the authority of the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad. Its founder, Tahir ibn Husayn, was a general who had supported the caliph al-Ma'mun in the civil war against his brother al-Amin, and he was rewarded with the governorship of Khorasan. His successors ruled from Nishapur and were known as patrons of Persian culture. The Tahirids were generally loyal to the caliphate, and they were overthrown by the Saffarids under Ya'qub ibn al-Layth, who captured Nishapur.
