The Russo-Turkish War of 1768 to 1774 was fought between Russia under Catherine the Great and the Ottoman Empire, which declared war after Russia's interference in Poland and the pursuit of Polish rebels across the border. Russian armies won victories at Larga and Kagul in 1770, and a Russian fleet that had sailed from the Baltic to the Mediterranean destroyed the Ottoman fleet at Chesma. The war ended with the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, which gave Russia access to the Black Sea, annexed lands in the Ukrainian steppe, declared the Crimean Khanate independent of the Ottomans and gave Russia a claim to speak for Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire. Russia annexed Crimea in 1783.
