The Russo-Turkish War of 1787 to 1792 was fought after the Ottoman Empire, encouraged by Britain and Prussia, demanded that Russia return Crimea, which Catherine the Great had annexed a few years earlier. Austria later joined Russia as an ally. The Russian commander Alexander Suvorov won major victories at Kinburn, Focsani and Rymnik, and his storming of the fortress of Izmail in 1790 became legendary. At sea, Admiral Fyodor Ushakov defeated the Ottoman fleet in the Black Sea. The Treaty of Jassy confirmed Russia's possession of Crimea and gave it the Black Sea coast between the Bug and the Dniester rivers, strengthening its position as a Black Sea power.
