The Russo-Turkish War of 1676 to 1681 was fought between the Tsardom of Russia and the Ottoman Empire for control of the Ukrainian lands along the Dnieper. The conflict arose after the Ottomans backed the Cossack hetman Petro Doroshenko against rival Cossack leaders who were supported by Moscow. The main fighting centred on the fortress of Chyhyryn, which the Ottomans and their Crimean Tatar allies besieged and captured in 1678, after which the Russians and Cossacks destroyed it as they withdrew. The war ended with the Treaty of Bakhchisaray, which established a border along the Dnieper and a truce lasting twenty years. It was the first direct war between the two powers.
