The Russo-Persian War of 1826 to 1828 was the last major war between the Russian Empire and Qajar Iran, and it followed an earlier war that had ended with Persia losing much of the Caucasus. Persia, led by Crown Prince Abbas Mirza and encouraged by Britain's reluctance to help Russia, attacked to recover its lost territories, but the Russian army under General Ivan Paskevich won decisive victories and took Yerevan. The war ended with the Treaty of Turkmenchay, in which Persia ceded the khanates of Erivan and Nakhichevan, paid a large indemnity and granted extraterritorial rights to Russians. The treaty fixed the border along the Aras River, and the Russian envoy Alexander Griboyedov was killed in Tehran in 1829.
