Bernhard Riemann was born on 17 September 1826 in Breselenz. A German mathematician, Riemann made deep contributions to analysis, number theory and differential geometry despite a short life. His 1854 lecture on the foundations of geometry introduced the concept of curved spaces of any dimension, which later gave Einstein the mathematical framework for general relativity. In 1859 he published a paper on the distribution of prime numbers that introduced the zeta function and the Riemann hypothesis, one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. He studied at Gottingen under Gauss and later succeeded Dirichlet as professor there, but died of tuberculosis in his thirties.
