Rise of Hasmonean dynasty

167 BCE

The Hasmonean dynasty emerged from the Maccabean revolt, a Jewish uprising against the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had banned Jewish practices and desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem. The revolt was started by the priest Mattathias and led by his son Judas Maccabeus, who rededicated the Temple, an event commemorated at Hanukkah. His brothers and their descendants then ruled Judea as high priests and, from the time of Aristobulus I, as kings, expanding the territory to include much of ancient Israel. Civil war between two Hasmonean brothers allowed the Roman general Pompey to intervene and take Jerusalem, and the dynasty was displaced by Herod the Great.
