Release of Viber

2010

Viber is a messaging and calling application for smartphones, which first allowed users to make free voice calls over the internet and later added text messages, group chats, stickers and video calls. It was founded by Israeli entrepreneurs Talmon Marco and Igor Magazinnik, and launched first for the iPhone before spreading to other platforms. It gained users quickly in many countries, especially in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia. The Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten bought Viber in 2014 for about 900 million dollars. It competes with services such as WhatsApp and Telegram, and uses end-to-end encryption for messages, with its operations based largely in Luxembourg.
