Publication of The Tempest

1623

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, thought to have been written around 1610 or 1611 and first printed in the First Folio of 1623, where it appears as the opening play. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, lives with his daughter Miranda after being overthrown by his brother, and uses magic with the help of the spirit Ariel to bring his enemies to the island. The play includes the enslaved Caliban and a shipwreck. It deals with power, forgiveness, illusion and colonization, and ends with Prospero giving up his magic. It is often regarded as one of Shakespeare's last plays written alone.
