The Snow Queen is a literary fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, told in seven stories. It follows the girl Gerda, who goes on a long journey to rescue her friend Kay after a splinter of a magic mirror lodges in his heart and eye, turning him cold and taking him to the palace of the Snow Queen. Along the way she meets a witch, a prince and princess, robbers and a reindeer who help her. The story is about the power of innocence, love and faith against coldness and reason. It was published in a collection of new fairy tales in the winter of 1844, and it has been the inspiration for many stage and screen versions, including Disney's Frozen.
