Publication of The Hound of the Baskervilles

1902

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a crime novel by Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr Watson. It was serialised in The Strand Magazine from 1901 to 1902 and then published as a book. Holmes and Watson investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskerville on Dartmoor, where a family curse speaks of a monstrous spectral hound, and they try to protect his heir, Sir Henry. The novel combines mystery with elements of Gothic horror, and the bleak moorland is almost a character in itself. Doyle acknowledged the help of a friend, Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who told him of Devon legends. Many critics consider it the finest of the Holmes stories.
