Pride and Prejudice was published in London on 28 January 1813 by Thomas Egerton, credited only to the author of Sense and Sensibility, as Jane Austen did not put her name to her books during her lifetime. She had written an early version, called First Impressions, in the 1790s. The novel follows Elizabeth Bennet, the intelligent second daughter of a country gentleman in Hertfordshire, and her changing relationship with the proud and wealthy Fitzwilliam Darcy. With wit and irony it explores marriage, money, class and the importance of first impressions. It sold well, and over the following two centuries it became one of the best-loved novels in English, adapted for television, film and the stage many times.
