Ja, vi elsker dette landet, meaning Yes, We Love This Country, is the national anthem of Norway. The poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson wrote the words, the first stanza of which dates from 1859 and which he completed years later, and the composer Rikard Nordraak set them to music. It was first performed in public on 17 May 1864, when Norway marked the fiftieth anniversary of its constitution. Norway has never formally declared it the national anthem, but it has long been treated as such, and it is sung especially on Constitution Day. Nordraak died young, in 1866.
