Mendel's laws are rediscovered

1900

In the spring of 1900 three botanists working independently, Hugo de Vries in the Netherlands, Carl Correns in Germany and Erich von Tschermak in Austria, found that their own experiments gave the same ratios in hybrid offspring described thirty-four years earlier by Gregor Mendel. They went through the literature and recognised his paper. The rediscovery began the science of genetics, a word coined by William Bateson in 1905. It also led to the chromosome theory of heredity, developed by Thomas Hunt Morgan with his fruit flies at Columbia University.
