Maratha Empire

from 1674 to 1818

The Maratha Empire was a Hindu-led power in India that arose in the Deccan under Shivaji Bhonsle, who fought against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and the Sultanates of Bijapur and Golconda. Shivaji was crowned as Chhatrapati, or sovereign, at the fortress of Raigad, which marks the formal beginning of the empire. After Shivaji's death the Marathas continued the fight against the Mughals, and in the eighteenth century the Peshwas, hereditary chief ministers based in Pune, expanded Maratha power across much of the subcontinent. A defeat at the third battle of Panipat in 1761 against an Afghan army halted this expansion, and the British East India Company gradually took over in the Anglo-Maratha wars.
