Launch of ABS-CBN Corporation

13 June 1946

ABS-CBN is a Philippine media company and the largest broadcaster in the country's history. It started as the Bolinao Electronics Corporation, a radio station business, and it adopted its current name after merging with the Alto Broadcasting System, which was owned by the Chronicle Broadcasting Network, in 1957. It launched the first television station in the Philippines in the 1950s. Martial law led to its closure in 1972, and it returned to the airwaves after the People Power Revolution in 1986. In 2020 the Philippine Congress declined to renew its franchise, and its free-to-air network went off the air, though it continued online and on cable.
