Kingdom of Aragon

from 1035 to 1707

The Kingdom of Aragon was a medieval kingdom in northeastern Iberia, created when Ramiro I inherited Aragon as a kingdom on the death of his father, Sancho III of Navarre. It expanded south during the Reconquista, with Alfonso I the Battler conquering Zaragoza. In 1137 the marriage of Petronilla of Aragon to Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, united the kingdom with Catalonia in the Crown of Aragon, which became a Mediterranean power controlling Valencia, Mallorca, Sicily, Sardinia and later Naples. The marriage of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in 1469 joined the crowns while keeping separate laws and institutions. The kingdom lost its own institutions when Philip V abolished them with the Nueva Planta decrees after the War of the Spanish Succession.
