Khanate of Bukhara

from 1500 to 1785

The Khanate of Bukhara was an Uzbek state in Central Asia, centred on the city of Bukhara, in present-day Uzbekistan. It was founded by the Shaybanids, descendants of Genghis Khan, whose leader Muhammad Shaybani conquered Samarkand and the lands of the Timurids. Bukhara became a centre of Islamic scholarship with many madrasas, and its rulers fought with the Safavids of Persia and the Khivans. Under the Ashtarkhanid dynasty, it flourished, but later it was weakened by internal conflicts and by Nadir Shah's invasion. The Manghit dynasty took power and ruled as emirs. In the nineteenth century the emirate came under Russian influence and became a protectorate, surviving until the Soviet revolution.
