Goguryeo

from 37 BCE to 668 CE

Goguryeo was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, together with Baekje and Silla, founded in the north of the peninsula and in Manchuria according to tradition by Jumong, also known as Chumong. It grew into a militarised state and, under kings such as Gwanggaeto the Great and his son Jangsu, expanded across much of Manchuria and the northern Korean peninsula. Its armies resisted invasions by the Sui dynasty of China in the early seventh century, notably at the Battle of Salsu, led by General Eulji Mundeok. The kingdom was eventually conquered by a coalition of Silla and Tang China. Its name is the root of the name Korea, and its murals in royal tombs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
