The Genpei War was a conflict in late Heian Japan between two powerful warrior clans, the Taira and the Minamoto, over control of the imperial court and government. The Taira, led by Taira no Kiyomori, had come to dominate the court. A revolt was launched in the name of Prince Mochihito, and the Minamoto leader Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army in eastern Japan, helped by his younger half-brother Minamoto no Yoshitsune, an outstanding commander. The war ended with the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, where the Taira were annihilated and the child emperor Antoku died. Yoritomo then established the Kamakura shogunate, beginning centuries of rule by warriors. The Tale of the Heike recounts the conflict.
