Franklin's lost expedition was a British naval expedition under Sir John Franklin, sent to find and chart the final section of the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic. It consisted of two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, with 129 men, and was equipped with the latest technology, including steam engines and preserved food. The ships were last seen by Europeans in Baffin Bay, and later became trapped in ice off King William Island. All of the men died, from cold, hunger, disease and perhaps lead poisoning, after abandoning the ships. Many search expeditions mapped the Arctic. The wreck of Erebus was found in 2014 and that of Terror in 2016.
