Founding of University of Southern California

6 October 1880

The University of Southern California is a private research university in Los Angeles, founded in the late nineteenth century by local civic leaders, among them the Methodist-affiliated Judge Robert Maclay Widney, at a time when the city was still small. It began with a small number of students and faculty, and as Los Angeles grew, it became the largest private employer in the city and a leading research institution. It is known for its programmes in film, medicine, business and engineering, and for the film school that is among the best in the world, with alumni such as George Lucas. Its athletic teams, the Trojans, compete in many sports and have a famous football rivalry with UCLA.
