The University of Calcutta was one of the first modern universities in India, established together with those of Bombay and Madras, in the wake of Wood's Despatch of 1854 on education. It was modeled on the University of London as an examining and affiliating body, which awarded degrees to students from colleges in Bengal and beyond. Among its early graduates was the novelist Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and the university became central to the Bengal Renaissance, with scientists such as C. V. Raman and Satyendra Nath Bose later working or studying in its colleges. It remains one of the largest public universities in India, with many affiliated colleges across West Bengal.
