Reuters was founded in London by Paul Julius Reuter, a German-born entrepreneur who had earlier used carrier pigeons to carry stock prices between Aachen and Brussels. In London he set up an office near the Royal Exchange to supply financial information by the new telegraph cable, and soon expanded into general news, which he sold to newspapers. The agency grew with the British Empire and became one of the leading news agencies in the world, along with Havas and Associated Press. It was among the first to use new communication technologies to supply financial data to traders. Reuters merged with Thomson Corporation in 2008, forming Thomson Reuters, and it is known for its reputation for impartial reporting.
