Founding of Jakarta

22 June 1527

The date marks the traditional founding of Jakarta, at the time the port of Sunda Kelapa, which Fatahillah, a commander in the service of the Sultanate of Banten and Demak, captured from the Hindu Kingdom of Sunda. He renamed the place Jayakarta, often translated as complete victory. In 1619 the Dutch East India Company under Jan Pieterszoon Coen destroyed the town and founded Batavia on the site, which became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The Japanese occupation renamed it Jakarta in 1942, and after independence it became the capital of Indonesia. Today it is one of the most populous urban areas in the world, and the government has been building a new capital, Nusantara, on Borneo, partly because of Jakarta's overcrowding and sinking land.
