Founding of Commerzbank AG

1870

Commerzbank is one of the largest banks in Germany, with its headquarters in Frankfurt. It was founded by a group of merchants in Hamburg to finance trade, under the name Commerz- und Disconto-Bank, and later moved its main seat to Berlin and then to Frankfurt. During the 2008 financial crisis, it took over Dresdner Bank, and then needed a large rescue from the German government, which kept a significant shareholding for many years. The bank serves private customers and corporate clients, with a particular strength in financing for Germany's medium-sized companies. Its Frankfurt headquarters tower, completed in the late 1990s, was for a time the tallest office building in Europe.
