The First Macedonian War was fought between Rome and King Philip V of Macedon, who had made an alliance with Hannibal after Rome's defeat at Cannae. Rome, busy in Italy fighting Carthage, did not send large armies to Greece and relied on allies, especially the Aetolian League and, later, Pergamon, together with a small fleet. Philip raided the Adriatic coast and Greece but could not decisively defeat the Romans, and the Aetolians made a separate peace. The Peace of Phoenice ended the war on terms that kept the situation largely as it was. Rome returned to the conflict a few years later in the Second Macedonian War.
