Discovery of Ersa

2018

Ersa is one of the small moons of Jupiter, discovered in 2018 by a team led by the astronomer Scott Sheppard using ground-based telescopes. It orbits in the same group as the larger moon Himalia and is named after Ersa, a goddess of dew in Greek mythology and a daughter of Zeus and Selene. It is only a few kilometres across and travels in a prograde orbit far from the planet. Its discovery was part of a continuing search for small distant moons of the giant planets.
